Dear AGNA members, we are so thankful for the support and interest shown for our certification study group in Calgary! There was not enough nurses requesting the spring session to create a full group, but we have been able to pair a few individuals preparing for the exam with mentors and access to help. For now, we are focused on putting together an exciting education event in April, and preparing for May's national CGNA Conference. here in Calgary. We will be at the conference and answering questions about our chapter's events and the study group plans. Please come and see us, or you can contact us any time, at agna.calgary@gmail.com, or...

Congratulations to Calgary Certification Study Group Members!

Posted by on Dec 18, 2018 in Calgary Blog | 1 comment

Congratulations go out to all the Fall 2018 Study group members who joined our pilot project in Calgary. Although we intended to start with just local peers, we were thrilled when a few members from other parts of the province joined us as well. I am so pleased to announce all 10 of our dedicated and hardworking group members passed the November CNA exam in Gerontology! We hope you will come and talk with us about how we all can support our peers in Gerontology at the May CGNA Conference.

Calgary Study Group Pilot update

Posted by on Nov 13, 2018 in Calgary Blog | 0 comments

Dear fellow AGNA members, As many of you may recall, our Calgary Chapter offered a small Gerontological Certification study group this fall, trialling an online meeting form as an option for our participants.  I am happy to report that this worked better than we had hoped, and over the course of two months, we were able to offer study group meetings both in person or online. Although we only offered this to Calgary members to ensure we could test this system, word got out and we were joined by 3 more group members that logged in from other towns and cities.  We plan to offer a more detailed report with members and Chapter Executives across the province in future months, but ask you to think of our study group members at this time. It is a significant undertaking to prepare for this exam, and many of us do this alone.  (If you wrote the exam in May 2018, don't forget the deadline to apply to ARNET for fees reimbursement is November 30th.)  Even for seasoned practitioners, it can be nerve wracking!  Half of our group members have now written the exam and the others will write in this week.  There is then a three week waiting period before they know whether they have gained their Certification in Gerontology. Please keep these nine nurses, (and any nurses who prepared on their own,) in your thoughts, as they work for this achievement in our shared specialization.  How reassuring to know that the commitment to expert practice and knowledge are alive and well in our community of practice! If you would like to send them a message, please email your thoughts to calgary-chair@agna.com, and we will pass this on. An update will be shared in late December, after our members receive their exam results.  Please consider whether you are interested in supporting a study group in the New Year, as the next exam period is in May! Sincerely, Kelly Baskerville and Sandra Stone, Calgary Certification Study Group...

Calgary Chapter Deprescribing Online Presentation

Posted by on Nov 11, 2018 in Calgary Blog | 0 comments

Greetings to our Calgary AGNA Chapter members! To celebrate Canadian Patient Safety Week, the Calgary Chapter held a joint event with the Alberta Association on Gerontology and the Kerby Centre on November 1st, with a presentation and discussion on safe medication use for seniors.  We were thrilled to have a group of 13 seniors and 15 health care professionals in attendance, and the conversations were very engaging.  A huge thanks goes out to presenters Mollie Cole and Safia Khaflan, who shared information from the Canadian Deprescribing Network. You can find the website, here: www.deprescribingnetwork.ca There were several AGNA members who expressed interest in this event, but could not attend an early-afternoon session.  Our presenter has graciously agreed offer this same session online on Wednesday, November 21st, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Please see our poster, here: AGNA Deprescribing webinar nov 21 Gerontological nurses often talk about their own knowledge of medications, but for this session, we learn to coach seniors and their caregivers to advocate for their own care, to understand the risks of medication use, and to start conversations with their health care team about what is right for them. Please email us at agna.calgary@gmail.com, and we will send you the login information for this online presentation. We sincerely hope you can join us!...
